On y va ? Is that you? Thank you for coming to my exhibition! Now that you are here, I would like to take you on a tour with me in order to discover a place I’m very fond of, a place that fascinates me. Shall we go? [[En avant !|3 Page]] Welcome to the Grand Canyon, a recurring theme in my paintings. To paint the various paintings of this location, I have been there many times since 1964. I love the paradox that it constitutes: the contrast between its unique starkness and an almost infinite space of possibilities. Contemplate this beautiful landscape made of mountains and valleys! [[Écouter|Page 5]] During my various visits and scoutings of the canyon, I love to sit on my folding chair to contemplate the reliefs and colors. Then, I close my eyes, and I listen to the sound of the wind that crosses the canyon. Sit down and listen, too. [[Continuer|Page 7]] Before painting //A Bigger Grand Canyon, 1998//, I started by taking pictures of the subject with my Polaroid camera. I took a series of shots to create assemblages from different points of view, which I call Joiners. The goal is both to build an image of reference and to avoid distortions caused by the wide-angle effect. By giving the impression that these canvases are flat, without perspective, I can explore a new way of depicting the world. [[Les couleurs…|Page 8]] This photomontage is unique because it has 60 vanishing points! It completely changes the feeling of space! Once this preparatory work has been finished, I could start painting… [[60 toiles ?|Page 9]] I love intense colors, so characteristic of fauvism. To get them, I use thin layers of paint that I slowly apply with a wavy motion. My goal is to cover all the white of the canvas. Finally, in front of this show of colors, I said to myself that we needed a painting as massive as what it represents. Yes, we needed 60 canvases… [[Continuer|Page 10]] Yes, you heard right, 60 canvases! For my painting, I attached the canvases, hung them on the wall and painted them as if they were a single immense surface. That allowed me to exceed the limits created by the dimensions of the initial support! [[Continue|10 Page]] Quel voyage !
